Strategies for Challenging Times

175 delegates came together to create a special event on the Property Funds landscape over the early part of this week. Events crystallised in the real estate markets by the sub-prime and subsequent financial crisis spurred some informed but passionate debate by a high quality and well qualified panel of speakers, expertly marshalled by Chairman Dr Frank Gelber.

The delegates heard the lessons from personal experience, were given inside information on how to manage portfolios in the current malaise, learned about ways to deal with a loss of investor confidence in the sector, and what to expect from the near term future and also the longer term outlook. Market snapshots were provided on the issues facing the European, the American and the Asian markets and how they apply directly to the Australian real estate space. The discussion groups focussed variously on the place for and future of derivatives, the current state of the direct property markets in Australia and how we address the technical valuation and taxation issues.

Some of these themes were carried into day two drilling down into specifics of revised taxation treatment of trusts, the wholesale funds and the retail funds while the final panel sought to allocate the responsibility for the current mess – with the majority blaming Wall Street! Feedback to date indicates that the event was extremely successful with the quality and relevance of the speakers and the venue being featured as particular highlights.

A further highlight of the event was the annual Forum dinner at which the two awards were conferred. Westfield Group was awarded the A-REIT Manager of the Year while APN Funds Management won the Property Securities Fund Manager of the Year.
